More evidence obesity may lower IVF success
Two new studies found that the odds of having a baby via in-vitro fertilization (IVF) may be lower for obese women than their thinner counterparts. As an Ob-gyn, I get many patients coming to my office after undergoing IVF, who already have medical conditions related to obesity that can complicate a pregnancy, like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, hypothyroidism and other hormonal imbalances. Unfortunately for many of these high-risk patients, the outcome can be miscarriage early on in the pregnancy. This is why I always recommend that women who are considering IVF have a medical exam prior to conception to identify potential risk factors and increase the chances of a healthy pregnancy.
