Fan favorite, Who’s Line Is It Anyway? star Colin Mochrie suffered a detached retina and is now recovering from eye surgery.

The injury was first announced via Instagram on January 2, and his medical team was optimistic about a full recovery. The comedian has postponed several of his upcoming live dates while he heals.

This included performances at Niagara Falls, Ontario, where he was scheduled to perform on January 2 and 3 as part of the HYPROV tour. Another show canceled was on January 9 in Walnut Creek, California, where a planned appearance with longtime Whose Line costar Brad Sherwood was meant to take place. on January 9 in Walnut Creek, California.

I’ll admit it, eye health like this makes me squeamish. Plus I grew up watching Mochrie turn total chaos into clean laughs on “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”, and it’s jarring to see my favorite in such a medical emergency.

A medical emergency

Retinal detachment sounds very technical, but the reality is very blunt and simple. The retina is the light-sensitive layer in the back of your eye, and if it pulls away, vision can be at risk. Quickly and permanently.

The Mayo Clinic notes that retinal detachment is a genuine medical emergency, and the danger of lasting vision loss rises the longer it goes untreated. Common warning signs can include a sudden increase in floaters, flashes of light, or a shadow creeping across your field of vision.

HYPROV hits pause

People Magazine reported that the update came via a joint social media post involving Mochrie, his tour partner Asad Mecci, and the HYPROV account. The message added that Mochrie was grateful for the support and wants to get back onstage once he’s able.

If you have a ticket, it’s important to know that Entertainment Weekly said that organizers are working on new dates, that previously purchased tickets will be honored, and that refund information will be available for anyone who can’t make the rescheduled shows.

TV Insider emphasized that the message leaned hard on gratitude and patience, with fans flooding the comments with well-wishes. Which is always a positive.

If you’ve never heard of HYPROV, it’s a very unique night out. During each show, Mecci hypnotizes volunteers from the crowd, and Mochrie builds the comedy around the unpredictable results.

Colin Mochrie and Who’s Line?

Mochrie has been a steady presence in a show format that doesn’t allow comfort. Entertainment Weekly reports that he appeared on the American version from 1998 to 2007, and then again from 2013 to 2024.

Additionally, he’s the show’s most constant performer. E! Online stated that he holds the record for appearances on “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” with 431 episodes. Amazingly he’s famously low-key about pre-show prep, basically a coffee and he’s good to go.

For now, the facts are Mochrie had emergency surgery, his team says recovery is the priority, and the postponed shows will be sorted when he’s healthy.

The story is a great reminder that aging is real, even for the people we’ve watched forever.
