Penélope Cruz revealed at the Cannes Film Festival that she was warned about a possible brain aneurysm while filming The Black Ball, a Spanish drama that became one of the festival’s major talking points in May 2026. The actress said the scare came moments before she was due on set.

According to Variety, Cruz was preparing to film a scene as a cabaret singer when she received the warning from her doctor. She said she was putting on her wig when she was told there may be a brain aneurysm, and the moment left her thinking she was “about to die.”

Cruz said she asked her doctor if she could still dance and do cardio for the scene. The doctor cleared her to continue, and she went ahead with filming. HOLA reported that the warning later turned out to be a false alarm, but Cruz still described the experience as surreal and deeply emotional.

The Black Ball received a 16-minute standing ovation at Cannes. Reuters reported that the film, directed by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, follows three linked stories and deals with Federico García Lorca, homosexuality, the Spanish Civil War, and the lives of people pushed to the margins.

Cruz has been one of the most recognizable international actresses for decades. Many American viewers know her from Vanilla Sky, Blow, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and her work with Pedro Almodóvar.

The Academy Awards lists Cruz as the winner for Best Supporting Actress for Vicky Cristina Barcelona at the 2009 Oscars. That win helped cement her place as a global film star, not just a festival favorite.

What is a brain aneurysm?

A brain aneurysm is a bulge in a weakened blood vessel in or around the brain. The Mayo Clinic states that many small brain aneurysms do not cause symptoms and may only be found during imaging for another issue.

However, a ruptured brain aneurysm is a serious medical emergency, often marked by a sudden, severe headache. Other warning signs can include nausea, vomiting, stiff neck, blurred or double vision, sensitivity to light, seizure, confusion, drooping eyelid, or loss of consciousness.

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke says small aneurysms that are not growing usually do not show symptoms, while larger or growing aneurysms may press on brain tissue or nerves.

When to see a doctor

Any sudden health change deserves attention, especially a headache that feels unusually severe or different from normal. Information from the CDC shows that sudden severe headache, sudden vision trouble, sudden confusion, trouble speaking, dizziness, loss of balance, or one-sided weakness can be warning signs of stroke and should prompt a 911 call.

Cruz’s scare ended as a false alarm. But the story still serves as a reminder of how quickly an ordinary day can turn scary when your health is suddenly in question.
