New Billy Joel Health Update Gives Fans a Reason to Smile

On March 12, 2026, Billy Joel’s daughter, Alexa Ray Joel, said the legendary singer is doing great as he recovers from treatment for normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH).
NPH is a brain disorder, one that caused Joel to cancel many shows in 2025 after problems with balance, vision, and hearing.
Entertainment Weekly reported that Alexa Ray said her father has been doing physical therapy regularly, is following a diet, and is losing weight. She also said that he is resilient and proactive.
Ultimate Classic Rock highlighted that his ongoing performances were making the condition worse. This is what led to hearing, vision, and balance problems.
For anyone unfamiliar, Billy Joel, 76, is one of the most recognizable names in the United States. His work spans multiple decades, and for many fans over 50, his music is a soundtrack to their lives. He has sold more than 150 million records, has 33 Top 40 hits, and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1999.

What makes normal pressure hydrocephalus so serious?
According to the Cleveland Clinic, normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) happens when fluid builds up in or around the brain and disrupts brain function.
Johns Hopkins Medicine adds that it most often affects older adults, especially people over 60.
The reality is that NPH can look like other age-related conditions, including dementia, even though it’s sometimes reversible with treatment.

Symptoms to watch
The three main symptoms are:
- Gait issues
- Urinary incontinence
- Cognitive difficulties.
These issues can show up as trouble walking, poor balance, falls, forgetfulness, confusion, mood changes, difficulty responding to questions, and loss of bladder control.
Effectively, it starts with walking changes and then spills into memory and daily function.
If these symptoms sound familiar, contact your doctor immediately.
Will Billy Joel ever be able to tour again?
The truth is, nobody can honestly say if Billy Joel will tour again.
As the Cleveland Clinic writes, many people improve after shunt treatment, sometimes within hours or days. Often the outlook depends a lot on early treatment and the person’s overall condition.
However, there are positive signs. Joel’s camp said in 2025 that he hoped to return to the stage, and Ultimate Classic Rock found that he made a surprise appearance in January 2026 to perform a couple of songs with a tribute band.
As everyone knows, health comes first, yet the door does not look fully closed on Joel’s music career at this point.
