Megan Thee Stallion was hospitalized after falling ill during a performance of Moulin Rouge! The Musical on Broadway on Tuesday, March 31, 2026. While she was taken to hospital, her understudy stepped in and the show continued.

According to ABC7’s coverage, doctors later identified the issue as extreme exhaustion, dehydration, vasoconstriction and low metabolic levels. TMZ added that she was treated, discharged and resting afterward, and Reuters said she planned to return after taking Wednesday off to recover.

For readers who might not know who this celebrity is, Megan Thee Stallion is the Houston rapper and songwriter behind hits like “Savage” and “Hot Girl Summer.” She is also a three-time Grammy winner.

We dig deeper into the diagnosis below.

What does vasoconstriction mean?

The Cleveland Clinic states that vasoconstriction happens when the muscles around blood vessels tighten and make the space inside smaller. In simple terms, the vessels narrow.

Too much of it can reduce blood flow, raise blood pressure and, in some cases, contribute to severe headaches or circulation problems in fingers and toes.

It’s not always a symptom you’ll spot on its own and is often paired with other issues.

Exhaustion and dehydration

Extreme exhaustion sounds obvious, but it can show up in a number of ways. For example, fatigue often comes with very low energy, trouble concentrating, low motivation, irritability, muscle pain and weakness. All of which are far more than just feeling tired after a long day.

Dehydration is easier to recognize. The common symptoms include thirst, dark yellow urine, peeing less often, dizziness or lightheadedness, tiredness, a dry mouth, lips and tongue, and sunken eyes.

If you experience any of the above, combined with dizziness that does not go away when you stand, or if you are unusually tired, confused, breathing quickly or peeing much less than normal, seek immediate medical help.

Low metabolic levels

From Megan Thee Stallion’s diagnosis, we’re left with the vaguest phrase from the public reports, “low metabolic levels.” As the reports did not explain exactly what measurement doctors meant, it’s worth being careful here.

In everyday coverage, language like that can overlap with low blood glucose or other metabolic imbalances. For example, NIDDK says low blood glucose can cause shakiness, hunger, tiredness, dizziness, lightheadedness, confusion, headache and a heartbeat that feels too fast or uneven.

In general, low blood glucose can be linked to not eating enough carbohydrates, fasting, increased physical activity, alcohol without enough food, illness, or certain medicines

MedlinePlus also notes that electrolyte imbalance can happen when body water changes through dehydration, heavy sweating, vomiting, diarrhea, not drinking enough fluids, or intense exercise in hot weather.

From the audience perspective, Broadway shows often look polished to perfection, but the rehearsals and live performances are punishing. The causes of some of the symptoms described clearly showcase how punishing it really is.
