Actress and model, Jenny McCarthy says a hidden dental infection turned into a long and painful health ordeal. She shared this medical story on Maria Menounos’ Heal Squad podcast on March 31.

During the interview, McCarthy said the trouble began after a root canal was not fully cleaned out. The issue snowballed into repeated infections, swellings, surgeries, and even shocking growths on her eyelids.

According to Fox News, McCarthy described the experience as “six months of living hell” and said the infection kept returning even after treatment. The problem spread into her jawbone, where she said “toxic pools” were found under her wisdom teeth.

For those unsure of where they know Jenny McCarthy, she first appeared on TVs in the 90s. McCarthy was a loud unmistakable TV personality and most people know her from MTV’s Singled Out or her later talk-show work, The View, and more recently as a judge on The Masked Singer.

What pushed doctors to look deeper?

By the time McCarthy was dealing with surgery after surgery, the situation had moved well beyond routine dental trouble.

The Independent reported that she said the untreated infection spread to her jawbone, and that she endured recurring infections even after multiple oral procedures.

She also said doctors eventually tested her for mold, and that is when she was told she had mycotoxin poisoning, which she described as the reason her body was not healing properly.

Doctors and outlets covering the interview described a messy chain of symptoms, and frankly, it sounds brutal. It started with jaw swelling, massive pain, insomnia, agonizing leg cramps, repeated mouth infections, and growths on her eyelids. Among the symptoms, she also suffered from tooth decay, rejected implants, and what she called “oozing” infection coming through her eye area. At one point, she said her teeth and implants were falling out.

A different kind of celebrity story

This is far from the kind of celebrity update anyone wants to read over morning coffee. Reality Tea reported that McCarthy said she became antibiotic-resistant during the ordeal, and that she is now following a heavy-duty mold protocol that could last up to a year.

The positive for McCarthy is that she is on the road back to health, though not all the way there yet. As Fox News put it, McCarthy still has “a long way to go” in recovery, but she has at least named the problem that seemed impossible to pin down for months.

In a celebrity culture that often smooths over the ugliest parts, this one came through raw and unsettling. Maybe that is why people are paying attention.
