Dwayne Johnson revealed that he recently faced a testicular cancer scare after finding a painful lump while taking a shower.

According to Esquire, Johnson shared the story in the magazine’s Summer 2026 issue, published June 11, 2026. The actor said he noticed the lump on a Friday night, waited through the weekend as the pain got worse, then saw a doctor on Monday.

What Johnson actually said

Johnson told Esquire he kept the scare from his wife, Lauren Hashian, until he knew more. “I didn’t even tell Lauren,” he said. “I didn’t want to worry her.”

People reported that doctors first suspected epididymitis, which is inflammation of the epididymis, a tube at the back of the testicle that stores and carries sperm. Still, Johnson said his doctor warned it could also be cancer, so he needed an ultrasound.

That meant he had to go through a full day of promotion for a Jumanji movie with Kevin Hart and Jack Black while waiting for answers. Johnson said he had to live with it for “twenty-four hours, not knowing.”

Johnson later told Esquire, “I’m fine,” while also saying the lump had been “really painful.”

Most people know Johnson as The Rock, the former WWE star who became one of the most recognizable actors in Hollywood.

His career has taken him from wrestling rings to major franchises, including Jumanji, Fast & Furious, and Disney’s Moana. Few entertainers have crossed over that successfully. It’s even rarer to see someone widely viewed as an action star speak so openly about a health issue many men still find embarrassing.

What a lump in the testicle region can mean

The Cleveland Clinic states that a lump on or around a testicle can be a sign of several conditions. Most are not cancer, but some can be serious and need medical attention.

Possible causes include epididymitis, hydrocele, inguinal hernia, orchitis, spermatocele, varicocele, and testicular cancer. Importantly, most lumps found around the testicles are not cancerous, but men should still schedule an appointment for a proper diagnosis.

What the lump can feel like

The Mayo Clinic states that scrotal masses can cause different symptoms depending on the cause. A man may notice a lump, sudden pain, swelling, heaviness, aching, or pain that spreads into the groin, stomach, or lower back.

It’s important to be aware that not all lumps hurt.

The Cleveland Clinic highlights that testicular cysts often feel like small, hard lumps, while testicular cancer lumps usually feel hard to the touch. Pain, swelling, or heaviness can also be warning signs.

How often should men check themselves?

It is recommended that men check their scrotum each month for changes. The goal is to notice anything unusual early, when many treatments work better.

A shower is a common time to notice a change, which is exactly how Johnson found his lump.

When to see a doctor

The Mayo Clinic advises getting emergency medical care for sudden scrotal pain, since some problems need quick treatment to prevent permanent damage to a testicle.

For any lump, swelling, heaviness, lasting ache, or unusual change, call a health care professional. Even if it doesn’t hurt.

Johnson’s story had a good ending. The main takeaway for all men is simple, go get any changes in your testicles checked.
