Legendary sports broadcaster Dick Vitale has been diagnosed with cancer again.

The longtime ESPN college basketball star revealed that his biopsy results confirmed melanoma in his lung and liver on April 13, 2026. He plans to begin immunotherapy.

According to Fox News, Vitale shared the update after a series of testing that followed abnormalities found on recent scans. Reuters reported that he had undergone a PET scan, a CAT scan, two MRIs, and then a biopsy after doctors saw something that needed a closer look. Even with the bad news, Vitale said he feels “fantastic” and is determined to beat this one too.

The Associated Press added that this latest diagnosis comes after earlier battles with melanoma and lymphoma in 2021, vocal cord cancer in 2023, and lymph node cancer in 2024.

Who is Dick Vitale?

Dick Vitale, also known as Dickie V, has been part of the sound of college basketball for decades. However, long before he became one of ESPN’s signature voices, Vitale coached high school ball, worked at the college level, and had a stint as head coach of the Detroit Pistons.

The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame notes that he joined ESPN in its early days and helped become one of the most recognizable voices the sport has ever had.

Lung cancer is cancer that starts in the tissues of the lungs. Johns Hopkins states that the two main types are non-small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer, with non-small cell being the more common form. Lung-related warning signs can include a cough that won’t go away, coughing up blood, shortness of breath, hoarseness, and repeated chest infections.

Liver cancer is cancer that starts in the liver, the large organ in the upper right side of the abdomen. The Mayo Clinic states that many people do not have symptoms early on, but when symptoms appear they can include weight loss, loss of appetite, upper abdominal pain, nausea, weakness, abdominal swelling, and jaundice.

How immunotherapy works

Immunotherapy is different from standard chemotherapy. As the National Cancer Institute puts it, it is a cancer treatment that helps the immune system fight cancer. In some cases, doctors use immune checkpoint inhibitors, drugs that block the “off” signals that can stop T cells from attacking tumor cells.

Vitale’s public tone has been fierce, and honestly, that feels true to who he’s always been. He has spent years fighting cancer while also raising millions for pediatric cancer research, and now he’s stepping back into that fight again with the whole sports world watching.
