Costco Issues Nationwide Recall for Mini Beignets After Label Mix-Up

We often cover food recalls on Ask Dr. Manny when the health ramifications are likely to be impactful. This is especially true with Costco’s recent recall of its Mini Beignets filled with Caramel.
The recall is due to a labeling mix-up, where the caramel label has ended up on beignets filled with chocolate hazelnut. This is highly problematic for anyone with nut allergies, as the product offers no warnings.
The affected sales window is January 16 to January 30, 2026. If you have a nut allergy, shop at Costco, and have picked up beignets, check your products now.

The urgency behind the recall
In many scenarios, recalls are about returning products that may have been contaminated in some way. This recall is different. If someone with a nut allergy consumes one of these beignets, it becomes an emergency situation fast. Hazelnut exposure can trigger anaphylaxis quickly and, without the right medicine, can be fatal.

When it comes to nut allergies, what happens is that the body’s immune system treats the food protein like a threat. For some people, even a small amount can cause serious symptoms like hives, swelling, stomach trouble, coughing, wheezing, and trouble breathing. All of which need to be treated quickly.
The worst-case scenario from a nut allergy is anaphylaxis. This is a severe reaction that can include airway narrowing, a dangerous drop in blood pressure, dizziness, and fainting. It’s a medical emergency.
As the Hawai‘i Department of Health stated, if someone shows signs of anaphylaxis, use prescribed epinephrine and call 911.
If your household includes anyone with a hazelnut or tree nut allergy and you discover the recalled product, keep it sealed and return it for the refund.
