Legendary ’80s Singer Bonnie Tyler in Induced Coma After Emergency Surgery

Bonnie Tyler was hospitalized in Portugal after emergency intestinal surgery. Reports say that the Welsh singer has been placed in a medically induced coma to help her recovery.
Her team first shared the health update on May 6, 2026, after she was admitted to a hospital in Faro, where she has a home. According to her official website, the surgery “went well” and Tyler was recuperating after the procedure.
Deadline reported that the 74-year-old singer was initially hospitalized in Faro sometime around April 30 and Page Six added that Tyler was “reportedly in an induced coma” after being rushed to hospital.
Entertainment Weekly later confirmed that her manager, Matt Davis, said the coma was medically induced “to aid her recovery” after the emergency surgery.
TMZ highlighted that some reports said Tyler had experienced abdominal pain for several days before doctors found an intestinal perforation. This detail was not in the official statement and has not been confirmed as the cause for surgery.
In the coverage, it has been stated that Tyler’s family, friends, and fans are concerned by the news, and her team asked for privacy while she recovers.

What is a medically induced coma?
A medically induced coma is not the same thing as someone naturally falling into a coma after an injury or illness. An induced coma can be used in intensive care as part of treatment, often with anesthetic drugs, and may help a patient cope with ICU procedures such as being on a ventilator.
The Cleveland Clinic describes a medically induced coma as a controlled coma in a medical setting. Effectively, doctors use medication to put the body into a deep state of unconsciousness so they can manage pain, reduce strain, support breathing, or help the patient through a serious medical situation.
That doesn’t automatically tell us Tyler’s prognosis. It also doesn’t tell us exactly why her doctors made that choice. Only her medical team and family would know the full picture.
