Today, Dr. Manny Alvarez appeared on Rachael Ray and fielded questions on common health problems sent in by Rachael's viewers. Here's a recap of the Q & A with Dr. Manny.
Hair Loss
Therese is 25 and losing hair; she wakes up to find hair on her pillow and finds hair on her brush constantly. Therese asked, What can she do to prevent hair loss?
Dr. Manny said he knows a lot about losing hair... Diet plays a large role in hair loss, he noted. Supplementing your diet with B-complex, Vitamin A, and folic acid might help decrease the hair loss in some individuals.

Eating Right but Not Losing Weight
Shannon has been paying attention to her diet and eating right, but hasn't been losing any weight. Why aren't the pounds coming off?
Small snacks during the day are important, Dr. Manny urged. If you're snacking on things like oranges, there's a lot of sugar in them so switch to things like veggies which have less sugar. And again, there could be something wrong with your thyroid, so check with your doctor to be sure.
Snoring
One audience member asked about snoring... Is it something to worry about?
Snoring is something to be concerned about, according to Dr. Manny. He asked if the questioner was waking up with headaches, which he was. This could indicate sleep apnea, Dr. Manny noted. Sleep apnea could lead to high blood pressure and puts you at risk of a stroke. Check with your doctor about being examined at a sleep center.

Cold Hands
I have cold hands even when it's 90 degrees in the summer, asked one audience member. What could be the cause?
Dr. Manny asked if she drinks a lot of caffeine, and the answer was yes. Overconsumption of caffeine could be the cause: Dr. Manny explained that caffeine can restrict the blood vessels and the resulting lack of blood flow at the fingertips could be the cause of her cold hands.
Bruising Easily
The last question of the day came from a woman who bruises easily, and wanted to know what might be the cause.
Supplementing your diet with Vitamins C and K might improve your body's ability to recover from bruises, Dr. Manny noted. But he cautioned that this could be a symptom of something else, and that being examined for these symptoms by your doctor was necessary.
