"During questioning at a trial, Carolyn Levy, director of Philip Morris youth smoking prevention programs, admitted that the aim of their programs was to delay smoking until age 18."
So what's the message, then?
Hey teenagers, smoking is so not cool right now. But, check it out, in a couple more years you'll be ready, and we'll be ready, and you're gonna love it.
I always kind of thought that my young children may not even give much thought to or remain indifferent regarding cigarettes, but then aPSA comes on television, and they might be thinking, " hmmm...smoking, what's that all about?" Controversial or even bad publicity is still publicity, Madonna's built a career around it.
No doubt the Truth ads are quite slick, and create quite an ugly picture of cigarette smoking and the cigarette industry, but remember these ads are produced on behalf of the American Legacy Foundation. The ALF receives their money from the tobacco industry, and as such the ads produced should never "vilify" the tobacco companies.
